Vrojo – Flamenco with a Twist
From my original painting, created in La Herradura, Andalusia, in 2015.
Vrojo is a seated flamenco dancer, painted in expressive reds, warm tones and contrasting colours. Her pose, the movement suggested by her clothing and the colours surrounding her are part of my personal interpretation of the world of flamenco.
I created Vrojo during an international art symposium in 2015 in La Herradura, the village on the southern coast of Spain where I live. Painters from several European countries were invited to work together over the course of a week in a large public exhibition space provided by the town hall. Visitors were welcome to come in, watch us paint and see how our artworks developed.
My fascination with flamenco began after attending a performance of flamenco music and dance. Living in the province of Granada, in Andalusia, where flamenco has such deep cultural roots, has given me plenty of inspiration for my series Flamenco with a Twist.
I usually work intuitively, mixing my paints directly on the canvas and allowing colours and shapes to develop as I paint. I am not looking for technical perfection. Instead, I search for perfection within imperfection.
Nor do I necessarily want to tell a particular story through my art. What I see in a painting may be quite different from what someone else experiences. Perhaps it brings back a memory, awakens a feeling or suggests a story of its own.
That is what I love about painting: my story can become your story.
