What lies behind the masks we wear?
Afterglow 2 is part of a series of paintings I created while living in the Netherlands, during a difficult period in my life. I have always believed that we all wear masks when interacting with others, sometimes consciously, sometimes without even realising it. How well do we ever truly know the person behind the face?
Interestingly, this idea took on an entirely different meaning in 2020, when wearing masks became part of everyday life.
The original painting was created with brushes and a palette knife on specially prepared oil painting paper with a linen texture, later mounted onto board. Its rich reds, soft blues and warm golden tones bring depth and movement to the reclining figure.
Afterglow 2 has a companion painting, Afterglow 1, in which the woman reclines in the opposite direction.
This canvas print reproduces my original artwork, including its expressive colours and textured brushwork.
