Mata Hari is part of my HeArt of Paris series, inspired by the remarkable women who lived, worked and made their mark in Paris between 1850 and 1940.
Born Margaretha Zelle in the Netherlands, Mata Hari reinvented herself in Paris, creating an exotic identity that made her one of the most talked-about women of her time. Dancer, performer, model, courtesan and, eventually, accused spy, she became a legend in which fact and fiction are still difficult to separate.
This painting is my own colourful impression of Mata Hari, rather than a traditional portrait. I wanted to capture something of the mystery, sensuality and extraordinary self-invention of a woman who refused to remain invisible.
The original painting measures 80 × 120 cm and was the first portrait I created for The HeArt of Paris, a series that eventually became both a collection of paintings and my book The HeArt of Paris: A Unique Journey Honouring Women Who Made the Evolution of Art Possible.
Fine art canvas prints are available in several sizes, including the original 80 × 120 cm proportions.
