Carolina Otero (1868–1965), better known as La Belle Otero, was one of the most celebrated dancers and courtesans of Belle Époque Paris.
Born into poverty in Galicia, Spain, she reinvented herself and became an international sensation, captivating audiences and attracting some of the wealthiest and most powerful men of her time. But behind the glamour, extravagant jewels and legendary beauty was a woman whose life had begun in hardship and whose later years were far removed from the splendour of Paris.
In my colourful, expressive portrait, I wanted to capture more than her celebrated beauty. With her extravagant hat, luminous necklace and direct gaze, she seems to challenge us to look beyond the glamorous image and discover the woman beneath.
