Le Beau Rêve
The original painting is available as a canvas print in various sizes, up to 80 × 100 cm.
Le Beau Rêve grew from my fascination with Art Nouveau and the women who appeared in the art and imagery of that period. Rather than portraying a particular historical woman, I wanted to create a woman of my own: decorative and dreamlike, but with a strong presence of her own.
I painted her in layers of acrylic, building the surface with brushes and palette knives to create the rich texture that is an important part of my work. Flowing lines, flowers and decorative forms surround her, while the colours move between turquoise and green, deep red, gold and black.
Symbols are woven into the painting too. The yin-yang symbol sits above her forehead, while the sweeping shapes around her echo both Art Nouveau ornamentation and the curves of the female form.
And, as with so many of my women, the eyes matter. She isn't looking away or posing for someone else's gaze. She looks straight back at you.
Le Beau Rêve became part of the artistic journey that eventually led to my HeArt of Paris series, in which I explore the lives and stories of women connected to the evolution of art in Paris.
