Gerda Taro – A tribute to a courageous woman
From my Women in Paris collection
This colourful, expressive portrait is my impression of Gerda Taro (1910–1937), the pioneering war photographer whose courage and determination made her one of the remarkable women featured in my book The HeArt of Paris.
Born in Germany, Gerda fled the Nazi regime and made a new life in Paris, where she met photographer Robert Capa. Together, they documented the Spanish Civil War, but Gerda was much more than Capa's companion. She was an independent, adventurous woman who believed passionately in fighting fascism and was determined to tell the stories unfolding around her through her photographs.
She often worked dangerously close to the front lines. In July 1937, at just twenty-six years old, she died after being struck by a military vehicle during the Battle of Brunete, near Madrid.
With this painting, I wanted to pay tribute to a young woman who lived with extraordinary courage and intensity, and whose own achievements deserve to be remembered.
The original painting was given to the woman who helped edit the Spanish edition of my book. Now this portrait is also available as a canvas reproduction, bringing Gerda's story and my interpretation of her to another home.
