Suzanne Valadon is part of my HeArt of Paris series, inspired by the remarkable women who lived, worked and made their mark in Paris between 1850 and 1940.
Suzanne's story fascinates me because she entered the Paris art world as a model, posing for artists including Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, but she refused to remain only the woman in somebody else's painting. She watched, learned and became an accomplished artist herself,
eventually exhibiting her own work and claiming her own place in an art world dominated by men.

My painting is my own impression of Suzanne rather than a traditional portrait. I worked from old black-and-white photographs for her face, then allowed colour and imagination to take over. Her flowing hair has an Art Nouveau influence and, as in many of my paintings, I incorporated symbolism into the work.
Behind Suzanne I painted my impression of a work by Maurice Utrillo, her son, who became well known for his paintings of the streets and buildings of Montmartre. I wanted his presence in the background because their lives and their art were so closely intertwined, although Suzanne stands firmly at the centre of her own story.
And she looks directly at you.
That gaze is an intentional element throughout almost all of my HeArt of Paris portraits. These women were so often remembered as somebody's model, muse, lover, wife or mother. In my paintings I wanted them to step forward, meet our eyes and be seen in their own right.
