Palingenesis is an acrylic painting inspired by a photograph of me when I was younger. I painted it many years later, combining my younger self with Art Nouveau-inspired lines, flowers, symbols and words of affirmation.
The background is filled with fragments of positive messages: reminders of beauty, happiness, peace, love and self-belief. They weave around the portrait almost like thoughts, memories and possibilities.
The painting became the cover of my book The HeArt of Paris, my homage to the remarkable women who helped shape the evolution of art.
For me, Palingenesis is ultimately about seeing ourselves differently. Not simply as we once were, or even as we are now, but as someone continually becoming. A reminder to recognise our own strength, beauty and worth.

I’m Renate van Nijen, a Dutch-born artist and published writer living in Southern Spain. Every image in this shop began as an original painting, created by hand in my studio.
