Oil Painting on Canvas 1976 - app. 61 x 51 cm (framed with a floating frame)

Art Style
Expressionist landscape realism with a strong touch of late Impressionism, characterized by emotional brushwork (impasto).

Image Description
The oil painting depicts a gloomy natural landscape at night or during a heavy storm. In the left foreground, three striking, brightly glowing birch trunks stand, with another one partially visible on the right. The ground is made up of expressive yellow-green brushstrokes that resemble sparsely lit grass. The background sinks into a heavy mass of dark brown clouds or hills. Signed W. Schneider 76.

Image Analysis
Composition: The vertical birch trunks on the left and right edges of the image frame the scene and guide the eye toward the center. A diagonal line created by the hilly ground breaks the rigidity and generates a dynamic sense of depth. Color and Light: A dramatic light-dark contrast (chiaroscuro) dominates. The bright white birches and yellow-green grassy areas create energetic highlights against the gloomy, almost monochrome dominance of the brown-black clouds. Texture: The thick application of paint (impasto) gives the work a strongly tangible, three-dimensional relief. The coarse, heavy brushstrokes or palette knife marks enhance the rough, wild character of the nature depiction. Perspective: The layering from near (trees) to far (hills and clouds) creates a sense of depth, which is visually shortened again by the heavy, flat-appearing sky. This produces a tense, atmospheric closeness.
