This is a print of my original acrylic paintings, an interpretation of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, the celebrated French writer, journalist and stage performer.
I was drawn not only to Colette’s famously unconventional life, but to the woman who had to reclaim her creative identity. Her earliest novels were published under the name of her husband, Willy, who controlled the rights and financial rewards.
Colette went on to build an extraordinary career under her own name, eventually becoming the first female president of the Académie Goncourt.
This portrait forms part of my Paris Women collection, a series of original paintings honouring remarkable women connected with the art, literature and cultural life of Paris.
Through my paintings and writing, I look beyond the familiar image to discover the woman and her story.
