Painting on Silk 1991 - Silk painting app. 68 x 47 cm (framed app. 80 x 60 cm, with passepartout)
Art style
The silk painting is done in a floral Art Nouveau style with clear influences of Japonism. The plant network spread all over and the organically twisted branches perfectly reflect the flowing lines of this era.
Image description
The picture shows a dense, dynamic network of dark brown branches spreading across the entire image. Numerous delicate leaves, shaded in light green-yellow, grow on them, along with several open, orange-golden flowers that resemble camellias or peonies. The floral pattern almost completely fills the white silk surface and looks like a section of an endless vine. At the bottom right, directly on one of the light leaves, there’s a fine, dark handwritten signature: 'W. Schneider '91'.
Image analysis
Composition: A rhythmic, all-over pattern where the curved branches cross diagonally and the flowers are distributed asymmetrically as visual anchor points. Color and Light: Warm, bright orange and ochre tones of the flowers harmonize with the fresh yellow-green of the leaves against a neutral, light background. Texture: The smooth surface of the silk lets the colors within the leaves and flowers blend softly into each other, while the dark branch lines add graphic sharpness. Perspective: Purely two-dimensional, decorative surface representation without spatial depth or casting shadows, reminiscent of the flat aesthetic of East Asian textile art.
