Oil Painting on Canvas 1977 - app. 63 x 53 cm (framed with a floating frame)
Art Style
The painting is in the style of late Impressionism with strongly expressive and naive elements (homeland and nature painting of the late 20th century). The focus is on capturing a shimmering, light-filled forest atmosphere through heavily textured brushwork.
Description of the Painting
The painting shows a dense birch grove with the characteristic white-and-black trunks standing on hilly, green forest ground. In the upper part, a dense canopy of leaves in bright yellows, whites, and light greens dominates, reminiscent of an autumnal or sunlit scene. A suggested path or hollow leads deeper into the dense undergrowth of the forest in the center of the image. In the bottom left, on the green moss, the work is clearly signed with a white brush signature: "W. Schneider." The oil painting is set in a modern, simple black shadow box frame.
Image Analysis
- Composition: The vertical birch trunks create a strong rhythm, while the diagonal dip in the middle skillfully guides the eye to the center of the image.
- Color and Light: There is a dominant contrast of light and dark as well as warm and cool tones; the dazzling yellow-white of the treetops makes the forest appear as if flooded with golden sunlight.
- Texture (Brushwork): The paint application is extremely thick, either spatulaed or dabbed (impasto technique), giving the forest floor and foliage a very tangible, three-dimensional relief texture.
-Perspective: The sense of depth is created by the fading and clustering of the trunks in the background, but it is broken up again by the flat dabbing technique in the foliage.
