his is my impression of Kiki de Montparnasse, who was a favourite model of many artists in Paris during the Roaring Twenties.
I’m not a portrait artist, and I don’t intend to be. For my Rediscovered Muses collection, I work from old black-and-white photographs I find online and create my own interpretation of each woman’s face. I usually create the body and background myself, without copying another reference image. I use surreal colours in the face, which is typical of my style.
I was inspired to paint Kiki after writing about her in my book, The HeArt of Paris. You can also read her story on my Substack; search for Renate van Nijen.
In almost all the portraits in this series, the women look straight into your eyes. I do this deliberately.
Kiki was also a singer and a painter. She was much loved for her eccentricity and could be seen as embodying some of the spirit of women’s liberation.
