Standing on the absolute edge of the Scottish mainland in Scarfskerry, this Highland Cow looks directly North into the wild elements. The title, ‘Norse’, is a deliberate nod to the deep Viking heritage that still shapes the identity, names, and spirit of Caithness. Drawn from life near my home of 24 years, this piece captures the raw, weather-bitten resilience of both the animal and the landscape. Bathed in rich, dramatic colour, the artwork reflects the immense, untamed energy of our northernmost coast—a place where epic skies meet the open sea, and the pulse of history is carried on the wind.

About the Artist

Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
