‘The White Space is Mine’ - abstract grid painting

‘The White Space is Mine’ is built on tension between structure and flow. The rigid white grid tries to contain bold, overlapping strokes of red and ochre yellow, but the shapes push past the lines, curve diagonally, and leave entire squares blank. That push-pull mirrors a neurodivergent experience: existing within systems that expect you to stay inside the boxes, while your thinking, energy, and creativity move in arcs and diagonals instead. The empty white spaces aren’t absence. They’re necessary breathing room where the grid stops demanding compliance and the paint gets to be itself.

Emotional & Sensory Details
The colour and texture add another layer of neurodiversity-affirming meaning. The thick, tactile red and yellow paint sits on top of the canvas with visible pressure and direction, like hyperfocus, stimming, or special-interest intensity made visible. Red and yellow together feel urgent and warm, but the grid keeps cutting them into fragments. Yet the whole image still reads as one continuous movement. It shows how neurodivergent minds can be both fragmented by expectation and powerfully coherent from the inside. The piece doesn’t resolve the grid, it works with it, on its own terms.
