What makes this 1804 plate from John Bell's Engravings of the Bones, Muscles and Joints one of the rarest and most viscerally powerful prints in The Millaner Archive is its authorship — Bell both dissected and engraved these plates himself, making this the most intimate anatomical atlas in medical history, where the surgeon's scalpel and the artist's burin are wielded by the same extraordinary hand, and surviving original copies command significant sums at specialist medical book auctions worldwide.
Published in Edinburgh in 1804, this atlas is the masterwork of John Bell — one of the most celebrated surgeon-anatomists in Scottish medical history and a foundational figure of the Edinburgh surgical tradition that would go on to produce Lister, Simpson, and the entire lineage of modern surgery.
Unlike other anatomical atlases where surgeon and artist were separate collaborators, Bell drew, engraved, and printed his own plates — investing each image with a directness and dramatic intensity that no other anatomical atlas of the era matches.

This plate presents four studies of extraordinary power. Two suspended écorché torso figures — labelled I and II — hang from cords attached to the skull, their back musculature, spinal column, and ribcage rendered in deep shadow and dense cross-hatching that gives the composition the brooding atmospheric quality of a Rembrandt study.
Below them, two detached studies (III and IV) examine the isolated skull and spinal column with the same unflinching precision.
The numbered annotations — running through the hundreds — reveal the extraordinary systematic thoroughness of Bell's anatomical method.
The warm sepia tones of the aged Edinburgh paper give the entire plate the character of a document that has absorbed 221 years of medical history.
