What makes this 1774 engraving by Jan van Rymsdyk — from William Hunter's Anatomia Uteri Humani Gravidi — one of the most significant medical illustrations ever created is its revolutionary truth: for the first time in history, the interior of the pregnant human body was rendered with such anatomical precision and artistic mastery that it changed the course of obstetric medicine forever.

Published in Birmingham in 1774, The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus was the lifetime's work of William Hunter — Physician Extraordinary to Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, and the most celebrated obstetrician of the 18th century. Hunter spent over 30 years completing this atlas of 34 folio plates, commissioning the Dutch master engraver Jan van Rymsdyk to render his dissections with a fidelity to anatomical truth never previously attempted in medical illustration.

This plate — one of the most celebrated in the entire atlas — depicts a full-term foetus in the womb in extraordinary cross-sectional detail. Van Rymsdyk's engraving technique combines mezzotint and line work to achieve an almost photographic three-dimensional rendering of tissue, membrane, placenta, and foetal form that was nothing short of revolutionary in 1774.

The composition is simultaneously a masterpiece of scientific documentation and a work of profound, quietly moving beauty — the curled foetal form, the delicate hands, the extraordinary detail of the surrounding anatomical structures rendered with the sensitivity of a great artist rather than the clinical detachment of a technician.

Original copies of this atlas are held by the Wellcome Collection London, the Royal College of Physicians, and leading medical schools worldwide.
