Driven by curiosity and the joy of creating
There is something in me that needs to come out. It doesn’t always come out as words. Often it comes out as a picture.
When I begin, I don’t always know what it will become. It might be a mountain, light over water, or a mood I can’t quite name until the lines and colours have found it.
My name is Svein Ove Hareide, and HareideART has become the place where I gather and share the pictures I make.
I started painting seriously in January 2019, after a long career as an engineer in industry and later as a senior lecturer at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. I have no formal art education, and perhaps that is exactly why curiosity and exploration play such a big part in how I work.
I deliberately do not call myself an artist. To me, that title belongs to those who have earned it through education, training under others, or recognition from the art world. I have no such background: no art school, no mentor, and none of my pictures have been reviewed by artists or art institutions.
I am self-taught. I have learned everything I know by studying, analysing and trying to recreate what I see, combined with trial, error and practice over time. I choose my words carefully because I respect those who have actually done the work that the title of artist requires, and because I want to be honest about who I am and where I come from.
Even though I don’t call myself an artist, I still dare to call what I create my art. This is not a claim to artistic status. It is simply what I make: pictures that mean something to me, and hopefully also to the person who chooses to hang them on their wall.
I feel my way forward. Some things work, some are discarded, and now and then something appears that I hadn’t planned when I started.
Over the years I have spent many hours drawing and painting in Procreate on an iPad Pro. Little by little, I have found a style that feels like my own.
Much of my inspiration comes from Northern Norway: the landscape, the light, the people and places I have a connection to. I don’t necessarily try to show them the way a photograph would. Often it is the memories and the feeling of a place that I want to bring out.
I’m not sure I need to put a big label on what I do. I only know that I take great joy in making pictures, exploring new ways of expressing myself, and sharing some of them with others.
Painting and creating have become something I need, not just something I do. It gives me energy, joy and a sense of still growing, even now that I am retired. This is not a passing interest. I have decided that this is something I will keep doing for as long as I am able. So you can be sure that HareideART is not something I will put aside any time soon.
That is what HareideART means to me.
