The music is the beginning. Everything that follows is discovered along the way. For me, that is one of the great freedoms of being a full time artist.
After decades of learning the materials, understanding composition, colour, texture and process, I can allow intuition to take its place alongside experience.
Silence and Space is therefore more than the title of an music album or the name of this new body of work.
It describes something I am increasingly interested in within my own practice: what can happen in the space between sound and silence, intention and accident, knowledge and intuition.
Silence and Space is the first work in what I hope will become an extended exploration of R. Carlos Nakai's music, with each artwork responding to a different piece and each beginning, as so many of my paintings do, by listening.

About the Artist
Every painting/artwork begins with a question I cannot answer. It grows through instinct, curiosity and moments I could never have planned. People often ask what the finished work means, yet I believe its truest meaning is found in the space between the painting and the person standing before it. There, memories awaken, emotions shift and new stories quietly emerge. If my work leaves you looking a little longer, feeling something you cannot quite name or discovering a reflection of yourself within the surface, then the conversation has already begun.
