Metta Bull – Colourful Spanish Bull
Metta Bull is an original oil painting inspired by my life in La Herradura, a seaside village in the province of Granada, southern Spain, where I have lived since 2011.
La Herradura is surrounded by mountains that embrace the bay in the shape of a horseshoe. In fact, la herradura is the Spanish word for horseshoe.
The bull, or toro, is one of Spain's traditional symbols and a subject I enjoy exploring in my paintings. My bulls are generally friendly creatures, full of colour and character, rather than fierce or threatening animals.
This particular painting has an interesting history. I created it on an old canvas that was given to me by an elderly artist who no longer needed it. I liked the roughness of the canvas and decided to leave that texture visible, allowing it to become part of the painting's character.
Metta Bull belongs to my series of colourful Spanish bulls, each created with a positive intention. I have also incorporated a message into the painting, something you might call a blessing for the person who would eventually become its owner.
That blessing isn't immediately obvious. It is simply there, quietly becoming part of the artwork.
The original oil painting has found its new home, but this canvas reproduction offers another opportunity to enjoy its vibrant colours, expressive textures and positive energy.
