As a neurodivergent artist, being perceived feels like being caught in a searchlight. This white diagonal beam is that moment of hyper-awareness — everything else goes black and all I can feel is eyes on me. Inside the light I have painted tally marks. I count. 6, 7, 6, 5, 5. I count how many times I have had to adjust my face, my voice, my body to feel safe under that stare. It is not one look, it is a tally that never resets.
The work is minimal in colour but high in texture because that is how my neurodiverse brain regulates. The stark black and white is sensory clarity when the world feels too loud, and the raised lines of the tallies are made to be touched — to stim on, to trace, to ground yourself. This painting is a self-portrait without a face. It is for anyone who knows what it is to think "I see you seeing me" and to keep counting anyway.
