I have read Marcus Clarke’s powerful novel three times throughout my life. Yet when I began this work, I had no idea where the painting was heading, let alone what it would eventually be called. I followed the colour, texture, shapes and marks without trying to force an outcome. Only as the artwork neared completion did Clarke’s story unexpectedly return and take hold of my imagination.

"For the Term of His Natural Life" is an abstract artwork shaped by memory, literature and the unpredictable nature of the creative process.

Set against the brutal history of Van Diemen’s Land, For the Term of His Natural Life explores injustice, suffering, cruelty and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. The story of Richard Devine, wrongly convicted and transported to the colony, seemed to echo something within the darker layers and dramatic tensions of this work. The title arrived late, but once it did, I knew it belonged to the artwork.

About the Artist

Every painting/artwork begins with a question I cannot answer. It grows through instinct, curiosity and moments I could never have planned. People often ask what the finished work means, yet I believe its truest meaning is found in the space between the painting and the person standing before it. There, memories awaken, emotions shift and new stories quietly emerge. If my work leaves you looking a little longer, feeling something you cannot quite name or discovering a reflection of yourself within the surface, then the conversation has already begun.
