When I began writing my book The HeArt of Paris, I became fascinated by the women of La Belle Époque and the part they played in the changing world of art. From that fascination came La Belle Nouveau, an imagined portrait of a woman who might have walked the same Parisian streets as the women immortalised by artists such as Alphonse Mucha.
I painted her in layers of acrylic, using flowing lines, flowers, rich colour and decorative elements inspired by Art Nouveau.
The female symbol on her headpiece became part of her identity: feminine, self-assured and strong.

As in many of my portraits, her eyes look directly at the viewer and seem to follow you as you move around the room. I wanted her to have both beauty and presence, rather than simply being a decorative woman from another age.
La Belle Nouveau is my own imagined woman of Paris: inspired by the past, but looking very firmly back at us from the present.
