Gallery Collection 60 - ‘Sediment’

‘Sediment’ shifts gears completely. No grids. No hard edges. Just horizontal drags of paint that look like sediment layers or old thoughts stacked up. Warm ochre, slate grey, bone white, and raw umber scrape across each other in thick, wet bands. You can see the canvas texture biting through. You can see where the palette knife stuttered and left ridges. There are chips and breaks at the edges like the painting has already lived a life. It feels quieter than your other pieces, but not calm. More like the moment after a meltdown when everything goes muted and your senses pull back.
Through a neurodivergent’s eyes this is shutdown. Or maybe recovery. The color palette is drained, regulated, safe. Nothing here screams. It hums. The horizontal motion repeats like stimming. Back and forth, back and forth, until the nervous system stops buzzing. Each layer covers the last but never completely. You still see ghosts of the ochre under the grey. That is how masking works long term. You pile on acceptable colors and behaviors until the original is almost gone. But it is never fully gone. The scrapes and exposed canvas are the moments where the real self cuts through. This painting isn't trying to contain chaos. It is the aftermath. Exhaustion made physical. Rest, but with the evidence of effort still showing in every drag mark.
