What makes this 1872 engineering blueprint one of the most significant documents in The Millaner Archive is its extraordinary dual identity — a masterpiece of Victorian technical draughtsmanship and the official construction record of one of America's most beloved working lighthouses, signed by the US Army Corps of Engineers 153 years ago.
This is the original Plate 1 engineering drawing for the Body's Island Lighthouse, North Carolina — submitted to the US Lighthouse Board on July 11th, 1872, and signed by George H. Elliot, Major of Engineers and Engineering Secretary.
The Body's Island Lighthouse — standing 156 feet tall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina — was one of the most ambitious lighthouse construction projects of the post-Civil War era, designed to guide ships safely through the treacherous Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras.

The draughtsmanship is extraordinary.
The left elevation reveals the lighthouse's distinctive alternating dark and light horizontal band pattern in meticulous pencil and wash rendering, with a tiny human figure at the base giving breathtaking scale.
The right cross-section exposes the magnificent helical spiral staircase climbing the full interior height — rendered with the precise, confident line work of a master military engineer.
The central column presents every floor plan from the 1st landing to the lantern gallery and watch room, each circular plan drawn with extraordinary geometric precision.
