What makes this 1837 patent by John Macintosh the most unexpectedly delightful document in The Millaner Archive is Fig. 3 — a top-hatted Victorian gentleman wearing a personal flotation barrel with complete dignified composure, capturing the era's magnificent combination of genuine engineering ambition and breathtaking eccentricity in a single unforgettable image.
Patented November 11th 1837, John Macintosh's Life Boat is a wearable personal maritime survival vessel — a rigid canvas-skirted flotation tub that a shipwreck survivor would step into and wear around their waist, keeping their legs underwater for propulsion while the barrel kept their torso afloat.
The concept is completely earnest — maritime disasters were devastating and frequent in 1837 — and Macintosh clearly believed deeply in his solution.
But the execution, rendered in beautifully delicate Victorian watercolour and ink work across five technical views, produces one of the most charming and quietly funny patent drawings ever filed with the United States Patent Office.

Fig. 3 is the masterpiece of the composition — a dapper top-hatted gentleman in a long coat and boots, stepping forward inside his personal flotation barrel with an expression of absolute Victorian self-possession, as if wearing a portable tub in the ocean is simply what sensible people do.
The remaining four views — rolled flat plan, inflated cross-section, cylindrical barrel, and rectangular variant — are rendered with genuine technical precision in soft grey watercolour washes on warm aged parchment, bearing the Classification stamp "462 Division" and the handwritten receipt date "25 Aug 1837."
