Two sisters. Two very different expressions. A moment shared between them.
What are they thinking? What has just been said, or perhaps left unsaid? Are they close, protective of one another, annoyed with each other, sharing a secret, or simply caught in one of those moments that only sisters understand?
I leave that story to you.
I painted Sorelle, meaning Sisters in Italian, in Gualdo Cattaneo, Italy, around forty years ago, during the years when I lived and worked there. It is one of only two paintings I still have from a much larger body of work created during that period. The others all found new homes.
Like its companion painting, Compassion, Sorelle also gives me a glimpse of myself as a much younger painter. At that time I still used black paint quite freely. Many years ago I stopped using black from a tube and began mixing my own dark colours instead, creating darks that are less intense and more
naturally connected to the other colours in a painting.

Yet I wouldn't change the black in Sorelle. It belongs to the painting, to the period in which I created it and to the artist I was then.
Perhaps these women remind you of your own sister, a friend, someone you once knew, or an entirely different story.
That's the wonderful thing about a painting. Once it leaves my artist's studio, the story doesn't have to remain mine.
