This piece is a deeply personal journey into memory, inspired by a majestic, purebred Arabian horse I had the privilege of caring for in my young adult days. He was a creature of beautiful contradictions—fiercely proud yet profoundly gentle, wild in spirit but exceptionally intelligent. In my mind, his untamed energy has always been intertwined with the wild winds of the Far North and the long, dark winters of Caithness, where I have lived for 24 years. This portrait channels that powerful presence, evoking the atmospheric warmth of intimate, magical folklore shared around the hearths of old croft houses while the gales howl outside. Crafted with rich, dramatic colour, it is a tribute to a horse that embodied the very soul of the northern elements: untamed, ancient, and deeply intelligent.

About the Artist
Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
