Inconvenient Formality needed no sketch – the image was so clear that it went straight onto the canvas. Usually the space behind my figures is flat; here, for once, there is an illusion of perspective. The details – the expressive fragment of a woman's silhouette, the puppy's pose and its gaze fixed on its owner – give the piece its playfulness and light irony. It is a painting about beauty, aesthetics and commitment: many of us bend over backwards for a flawless image, but if our "me" is defined by tight pencil skirts and high heels, how long before an unplanned trifle pulls the rug from under our feet? Acrylic on canvas, 70 × 100 cm, 2011. The original was bought in 2014; this print is reproduced from it.
