LH Bull – Colourful Spanish Bull
This colourful Spanish bull is part of a series of bull paintings I created while living in La Herradura, a village on the southern coast of Spain, surrounded by mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.
The bull, or toro, is one of the traditional symbols of Spain. But I prefer to paint friendly bulls, full of colour and character.
When I began this series, during the Year of the Ox, I decided to give each painting a positive intention. You could call it a blessing for the person who would eventually own the painting. That intention is incorporated into the artwork, although it isn't immediately obvious to the viewer.
I work quite freely, using both brushes and palette knives, often applying paint in a rough, expressive manner. I'm not searching for perfection. What interests me is the energy of colour and the way it interacts with the image.
I enjoy working in series, exploring a subject in different ways, and my Spanish bulls have given me plenty of opportunities to experiment with colour, texture and expression.
The original LH Bull was painted in acrylic on canvas, measuring 80 × 60 × 3 cm, and has been sold.
This canvas reproduction allows the bull to bring his colourful personality and positive intention into another home.
