- This dark and dramatic photograph documents a fallen tree caught in a state of eerie, permanent suspense. Completely severed from its upright life, the trunk is held a few feet above the ground solely by its own branches, which have dug themselves deep into the soil like clutching fingers. On the far side and twisting upward, smaller branches morph in the shadows, appearing like desperate, human-like figures or dark forest sprites attempting to claw their way free from the wood. This composition is a visual investigation into our psychological projection—our human desperation to find a reflection of our own soul and intelligence within the forest. Yet, the tree simply exists as it is. By capturing these twisted, sprite-like forms, the image deliberately plays on the subconscious fear that a tree might truly possess a mind and a soul of its own, challenging our comfort within the wild spaces of the world.

About the Artist
Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
