Tom R. Chambers
Tom R. Chambers makes work that tests the persistence of Geometric Abstraction by translating its reductive grammar into the logic of the pixel. Drawing on Suprematist concerns for pure form and relational tension, he does not reproduce Malevich’s gestures; he re-frames them through processes of digitization, magnification, and algorithmic re-composition. By isolating quadrilateral fields, amplifying discrete color units, and recombining them into new grids and planes, he treats the pixel as both material and concept.
His practice foregrounds scale, structure, and the perceptual friction between analogue origin and digital mediation, asking how abstraction’s claims to universality shift when rendered as discrete, addressable units. Works emerge through iterative filtering, collage, and modular re-composition, producing compositions that register historical lineage while insisting on contemporary media conditions. He aims to keep abstraction vital: to honor its formal rigor while exposing its contingency within networks of reproduction, display, and code in contemporary contexts and exhibition spaces.
He conducted an art residency at the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia (2025) based on interpretations ... at the pixel level ... of Rothko's childhood in Daugavpils.
He has exhibited his Geometric Abstraction in the USA, Russia, China, Hungary, The Netherlands, Romania, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Portugal, Mongolia, Greece, Spain, and Australia.
