Everything a human being could spend a lifetime chasing is piled here in a single collapsing heap.

A papal tiara sits beside a bishop's jewel-crusted mitre. A king's crown rests near an ermine-trimmed royal robe and a crowned turban.

Gleaming armor, a globe of the known world, a violin, an artist's palette, bronze busts of forgotten men — all of it abandoned on a crumbling marble tomb, inside a church whose roof has already begun to fall in. Nobody is coming back for any of it.

This is Allegory of the Vanities of the World, painted in 1663 by the Flemish Baroque painter Pieter Boel, now held in the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille.

Boel built this canvas around a single, devastating idea from the Book of Ecclesiastes — "vanity of vanities, all is vanity" — and populated it with the complete inventory of everything a 17th-century viewer would recognize as ultimate worldly achievement.

Political power, sitting in the crown and tiara. Military glory, in the armor and weapons.

Artistic and intellectual accomplishment, in the palette, the violin, the books.

Wealth itself, in the gold, silver, and precious fur.

Boel painted every single object with the same loving, obsessive realism collectors would have used for a portrait — and then buried the entire pile inside a ruin, because that was always the point.

Look at the sheer theatrical scale of the composition — this is an unusually large vanitas, built more like a history painting than a typical still life, with crumbling classical architecture and half-visible marble statues receding into shadow behind the pile of treasure.

Every object is rendered with total technical confidence: the cold gleam of polished steel armor, the soft shine of pearls on the mitre, the worn stone of the sarcophagus everything is resting on.

Boel doesn't moralize with words. He just shows you everything worth having, arranged as garbage on a tomb, and lets you draw your own conclusion.

At The Millaner Archive, we do not merely duplicate historical images — we thoughtfully revitalise their original majesty.

This museum-grade reproduction has been meticulously optimised to restore the full richness of Boel's original palette — the deep reds of the royal drapery, the cold gleam of armor and jewels, and the warm decaying stone of the ruined church — verified public domain, now available through The Masters Collection.

Once this archival edition is gone, this precise restoration will not return.

Premium Presentation: Printed on heavy archival-grade textured canvas with a soft matte finish that replicates the warmth, weight, and depth of Boel's original oil surface.

Flawless Resolution: Museum-grade clarity preserving every jewel, every fold of ermine, and the full obsessive detail Boel packed into this extraordinary composition.

Sizing Options: The monumental scale and unusually dense symbolism make this an exceptional statement piece for a study, library, or any room built to hold genuinely serious, thought-provoking art.

Available in standard gallery framing sizes (e.g., A4, A3, 11×14", 16×20").

Sustainably Made: Printed to order using premium, fade-resistant archival mineral inks.

A king's crown and a pope's tiara, sitting together in the same pile of abandoned treasure.

Very few paintings deliver a message that direct, that beautifully, or that permanently.

On your wall, this print won't just be striking — it'll be the one piece that quietly changes the conversation whenever someone actually stops to look at what's in it.

  • Poly-cotton blend canvas with a matte/satin finish. Scratch, crack, and warp resistant.
  • Vibrant, long-lasting colors with water-based HP Latex inks and UV protection.
  • Solid wooden frame from renewable sources, 4 cm deep.
