Close your eyes and stand in this meadow.

It is a warm summer afternoon in Dumfries and Galloway, 1895.

Before you rise the magnificent red sandstone ruins of Sweetheart Abbey — and behind every stone of this extraordinary place lies one of the most tender and heartbreaking love stories in the entire history of Scotland.

In 1273, Lady Devorgilla of Galloway — one of the most powerful women in medieval Scotland and mother of John Balliol, King of Scots — founded this Cistercian abbey in memory of her beloved husband John Balliol the Elder, who had died the year before.

So devoted was she to his memory that she carried his embalmed heart in an ivory and silver casket everywhere she went for the remaining 21 years of her life.

When Devorgilla herself died in 1289, she was buried before the high altar of this very abbey — with her husband's heart placed upon her chest, so that in death they would never be separated.

The monks named it Dulce Cor — Sweet Heart — and that name has endured for 750 years.

This rare photochrom print — produced between 1890 and 1900 using the celebrated Swiss hand-tinting chromolithography process — captures Sweetheart Abbey at the height of Victorian romantic tourism, when Sir Walter Scott's influence had transformed Scotland's medieval ruins into pilgrimage sites for a generation captivated by history, poetry, and the romance of the past.

The abbey's remarkable state of preservation — its central tower, nave arcading, and great Gothic window largely intact despite 750 years of Border weather — made it one of the most photographed monuments in southern Scotland.

Original photochrom prints of this subject and quality now command significant attention at specialist Scottish auction houses, where their combination of romantic subject matter and Victorian chromolithographic artistry makes them among the most sought-after heritage prints available.

The composition is one of the finest in the entire Caledonian Archive.

A vast sweep of vivid emerald meadow fills the foreground — lush, perfectly flat, creating a dramatic stage upon which the warm red sandstone abbey rises with sudden, breathtaking authority.

The central tower dominates the skyline, its gabled roofline and blind arcading remarkably complete.

To the right, the great Gothic window of the south transept frames open sky with extraordinary elegance.

The nave's blind arcading stretches across the middle ground in a rhythmic procession of rounded arches — each one a small act of architectural devotion to a love story that never ended.

The hand-tinted palette is magnificent — deep viridian meadow, glowing warm red sandstone, soft summer trees, and the pale ivory Galloway sky.

At The Millaner Archive, we do not merely duplicate historical scans — we thoughtfully revitalise their original majesty.

This museum-grade reproduction has been meticulously optimised to restore the luminous red sandstone warmth, sharpen the extraordinary Gothic architectural detail, and preserve the romantic atmospheric depth that makes this one of the most emotionally powerful prints in the Caledonian Archive.

A woman carried her husband's heart for 21 years and built an abbey so their love would never be forgotten. Seven hundred and fifty years later, it still stands.

This print brings that extraordinary story to your wall — and once this archival edition is gone, this precise restoration will not return.

On your wall, this print will do something remarkable — it will make people ask about the story.

And when you tell them about Devorgilla and the heart she carried for 21 years, they will never forget it.

That is what the greatest art does.

It opens a conversation that lasts.
