  • This artwork captures a collision of worlds: the ethereal purity of the mythical white horse meeting the raw, uncompromising texture of the Scottish element. Inspired by the quiet, ancient energy of the Flow Country, the dual portraits of the grand Lipizzaner and the rugged Shetland evoke the benevolent water spirits of northern lore. Woven into their white coats are peacock feathers, carrying the weight of their traditional meaning—immortality and the eternal cycle of life. For me, this symbolism is deeply personal, echoing the phantom-like memories of the real peacock and peahen that used to wander through our tranquil forest garden where we raised our five children. It is an exploration of the sacredness of memory, cast in the vivid, dramatic colours of the Caithness wild.

About the Artist

Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
