What makes this Victorian inventor's blueprint uniquely breathtaking is its humanity — a single sheet of paper on which Frederick Merrill Shaw wrote a poem about the dream of human flight, then drew exactly how he believed it could be achieved, entirely by hand, before the Wright Brothers ever left the ground.
This is one of the most extraordinary documents in The Millaner Archive — an original handwritten invention drawing by Frederick Merrill Shaw, a Victorian-era American inventor who designed a "Device By Which A Person Can Fly" — a personal silk-winged flying apparatus with an aluminium tube frame, anti-friction arm harness, and four diagrammed flight positions.
At the top of the sheet Shaw wrote a poem titled Aspiration — beginning with the lines "Oh that like doves I had two wings / The Ancient Bird of Travel sings / Then I would fly and do as best / Score from face that have oppressed" — a deeply human expression of the universal longing for flight that makes this document as poetic as it is scientific.

The engineering detail is remarkable: cross-sectioned anti-friction box diagrams, full-size arm hole specifications, silk wing deployment sequences, bird's eye view schematics, and weight-carrying calculations — all rendered in confident, flowing Victorian penmanship on aged cream paper with the characteristic warm patina of 19th century documents.
Shaw signed it proudly: "Frederick Merrill Shaw, Inventor."
