Look closely — because every single person in this room is behaving badly.

The Whig candidate at the head of the table is being kissed by an enormous woman while a small boy methodically picks his pocket.

A clergyman shovels oysters into his mouth while someone pours beer directly over his wig.

A man has collapsed unconscious across the tablecloth. The musicians in the background appear to be playing two different songs simultaneously.

Political pamphlets, chicken bones, and overturned tankards litter the floor.

A cat has been hit by a thrown object. And through the window behind the chaos, a full-scale riot is visible in the street outside — the candidate's own supporters, apparently.

This is William Hogarth's An Election Entertainment, painted in 1755 — the most savagely funny, most forensically accurate, and most permanently relevant political painting in the history of British art.

William Hogarth painted An Election as a series of four canvases in 1754-55, documenting a fictional but entirely realistic English parliamentary election from campaign dinner to chairing the corrupt winner.

Hogarth had spent his entire career turning the painted canvas into a moral weapon — his A Rake's Progress, Marriage A-la-Mode, and Beer Street and Gin Lane had already established him as the greatest satirist in the history of British visual art.

But An Election Entertainment — the first and most riotously complex of the four scenes — represents his most ambitious single composition: over thirty individually characterised figures, each one a precisely observed study in human self-interest, stupidity, or venality, packed into a single tavern interior with the density of a Dickens novel.

The painting's targets were entirely specific — the 1754 Oxfordshire election, in which Whig and Tory candidates spent extraordinary sums bribing voters with food, drink, and cash — but its satire is so perfectly calibrated that it applies with equal force to every election in every democracy in every year since 1755. Voters being bribed with free meals.

Candidates performing enthusiasm they don't feel.

Money changing hands under tables.

Chaos in the streets.

Hogarth painted this 270 years ago and somehow managed to paint this morning's news cycle at the same time.

This extraordinary dark academia gallery wall statement piece now hangs in the Sir John Soane's Museum, London — one of the most visited and most celebrated paintings in that remarkable collection.

This museum-grade restoration from The Millaner Archive brings the full satirical energy and extraordinary compositional complexity of Hogarth's masterpiece to your wall — verified public domain, now available through The Masters Collection.

On your wall, An Election Entertainment will do what it has always done — make every person who looks at it laugh, then look more carefully, then laugh again, and then feel slightly uncomfortable about what exactly they're laughing at.
