This vibrant piece captures a moment of pure, lighthearted freedom: a group of escaped pheasants completely thriving as they claim the wild countryside for themselves. Unbound and beautifully out of place, they navigate the open landscape with an unmistakable sense of cheeky indulgence, celebrating their sudden liberation. As an award-winning fine artist (BA Hons) who has spent 24 years watching the wildlife around our Caithness croft and forest garden, I am endlessly charmed by these unexpected encounters. Painted with rich, dramatic colour to mirror the iridescent, jewel-toned plumage of the birds, this artwork captures the essence of a peaceful yet lively countryside where nature always finds a way to surprise and delight us.

About the Artist

Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
