This lino cut design captures a moment suspended between reality and a waking dream: a majestic white horse appearing like a mirage at my very gateway. Flooded by the many shifting tones of sunlight streaming all around its perfect form, the image questions the boundary of longing—did I dream so deeply that it manifested before me, or am I merely imagining its ethereal presence? Its coat carries the untamed energy of a white wave caught by an offshore wind, or a wild deer stepping through the misty morning air as the sun heats the damp, dripping peat and moss. Embellished entirely in sunshine, it stands at the threshold of my home, answering a silent whim, and I hold onto the vision for as long as the light allows. As an award-winning fine artist (BA Hons) with 24 years on this Caithness land, I found the bold, clean lines of the lino cut to be the perfect medium to anchor this fluid, ghostly mirage into physical form.

About the Artist

Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
