Martin Minier was born in 1981 in Bayreuth, a city with a rich cultural history and a vibrant artistic tradition. Raised in a creatively inclined family, he was exposed to artistic forms of expression from an early age. This environment fostered his sensitivity to visual perception and laid the foundation for his artistic identity.
From a young age, Minier developed a strong interest in visual art. Drawing, an intuitive approach to color, and the careful observation of light and form quickly became integral parts of his daily life. Alongside classical influences such as painting and photography, he increasingly embraced contemporary visual media, which broadened his perspective and opened up new creative possibilities.
While his early works were still rooted in analog techniques, his focus gradually shifted toward digital art. A decisive turning point came in 2012, when he began working intensively with the iPad as an artistic tool. What started as an experiment soon evolved into a clear direction: the iPad became his primary medium. It allows for a direct and intuitive workflow, combining the spontaneity of drawing with the diverse possibilities of digital editing. Since then, it has served as a mobile studio, enabling him to create and develop ideas independently of time and place.
In both content and form, Minier’s work is marked by remarkable openness. He deliberately avoids stylistic constraints, moving freely between a wide range of subjects and modes of expression. His work spans abstract compositions, figurative elements, urban and rural landscapes, portraits, as well as surreal and atmospheric imagery. He repeatedly engages in experimental explorations of color, light, and structure.
A defining characteristic of his visual language is the tension between order and intuition. Layers, contrasts, and nuanced textures create depth and emotional resonance. Subtle references to his Bavarian roots can be found in many of his works—reflected in restrained color palettes, rhythmic compositional structures, and a calm, often contemplative atmosphere that contrasts with dynamic digital interventions.
Despite the fully digital creation of his works, Minier places great importance on their physical presentation. Selected pieces are produced on high-quality materials such as photo paper, canvas, or sturdy board. For him, the printing process is not merely technical but an integral extension of the artistic practice. Through careful calibration of tonal values, details, and surface qualities, the works gain a tangible presence and a lasting impact in physical space.
His artistic approach is shaped by an integrative understanding: Minier does not see digital technologies as a replacement for traditional methods, but as their contemporary evolution. The iPad functions as a bridge between classical principles and current visual culture. His process remains open and exploratory—many works develop gradually and organically until a coherent balance of form, atmosphere, and composition emerges.
He draws inspiration from everyday observations, as well as from music, literature, and fleeting moments. His works do not impose fixed meanings but invite individual interpretation, offering viewers space for personal associations and emotional engagement.
Today, Martin Minier lives and works in Erlangen, Bavaria. With more than a decade of dedicated work in the digital medium, he has developed a distinctive artistic voice that combines technical precision with a sensitive approach to image-making. His work exemplifies a contemporary form of digital art that exists both on screen and in physical space.
His works have been presented, among others, at the Werksschau 2022 at Kunstgalerie Marion Kotyba in Kulmbach. He is also currently featured in a virtual exhibition at Galerie Vielfalt Graziano in Switzerland.
