He signed the vase "Vincent" — not his surname, just his first name, the way a friend signs a letter.

That single detail tells you everything about what these sunflowers meant to him.

Vincent van Gogh painted his celebrated series of sunflower canvases in Arles, in the south of France, in August 1888 — working in a frenzy of creative joy, producing five large canvases in just over a week, painting with a directness and physical energy that had never been seen in still life painting before.

He was preparing the Yellow House — the studio he had rented in Arles — for the arrival of his friend Paul Gauguin, and he wanted the rooms to be full of sunflowers.

These paintings were, at their heart, a gesture of welcome, warmth, and human connection.

Vincent van Gogh painted at least five versions of this composition between 1888 and 1889.

This version — Sunflowers — is one of the most beloved, showing fifteen sunflowers in various states of bloom and decay in a simple cream vase against a warm ivory background, the table beneath them a flat wash of pure chrome yellow that Van Gogh used with almost aggressive confidence.

The brushwork is extraordinary — thick, swirling, almost sculptural impasto strokes that make the paint itself feel as alive and urgent as the flowers it describes.

Van Gogh mixed his yellows from the most expensive pigments available to him, spending money he could barely afford because he believed — correctly — that yellow was the colour of joy, of friendship, of the sun itself.

Today, versions of the Sunflowers hang in the National Gallery London, the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, the Neue Pinakothek Munich, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art — among the most visited paintings in any of those institutions. In 1987, one version sold at Christie's London for £24.75 million — at that moment the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction.
