One man.

Three goddesses.

One golden apple.

And the most catastrophic decision in the history of the ancient world.

Paris, the young Trojan shepherd prince, stands at the right of this magnificent composition — Mercury beside him, pointing with divine authority toward the three goddesses who await his verdict.

Juno, Queen of the Gods, displays herself with regal confidence.

Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom, turns with cool, measured elegance. And Venus — the one Paris will choose — stands with her back to us, her crimson robe pooling at her feet, a small Cupid clinging to her leg.

When Paris hands Venus the golden apple, she will reward him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen of Sparta. And the Trojan War will begin.

Peter Paul Rubens painted The Judgement of Paris around 1636 — one of several versions of this subject he returned to throughout his career, each one more magnificent than the last.

This version, now in the National Gallery London, is widely considered the supreme achievement among them.

Rubens was at the absolute summit of his powers — court painter to Philip IV of Spain, the most celebrated and the most sought-after artist in Europe, a man who moved between painting, diplomacy, and international politics with equal ease.

His figures possess a physical presence and luminous vitality that no other Baroque painter — not even Caravaggio, not even Rembrandt — could quite equal.

The flesh tones alone are a technical achievement that art students still study today.

The composition teems with Rubens' characteristic genius for organised complexity.

Three putti tumble at the goddesses' feet.

A peacock spreads its magnificent tail in the foreground, its blue-green iridescence painted with extraordinary naturalistic precision.

In the upper left, half-hidden in the trees, the figure of Discord watches — the goddess who threw the apple that started everything, now watching the consequences of her mischief unfold.

The sky behind the figures blazes with the warm gold of a Flemish late afternoon, and the pastoral landscape dissolving into the distance grounds this celestial drama in the recognisable world of the Low Countries.

At The Millaner Archive, we do not merely duplicate historical images — we thoughtfully revitalise their original majesty.

This museum-grade reproduction has been meticulously optimised to restore the luminous flesh tones, the extraordinary peacock feather detail, and the full dramatic colour range of Rubens' supreme Baroque masterpiece — verified public domain, now available through The Masters Collection.
