What makes this 1794 patent drawing by Eli Whitney the most historically significant American document in The Millaner Archive is its age and impact combined — at 231 years old, this hand-drawn, hand-coloured original working drawing is the birth certificate of an invention that reshaped an entire continent and is studied in every American history classroom to this day.

Patented March 14th 1794 and bearing the original US Patent Office Classification stamp "72-X Division", this extraordinary document captures Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin in two hand-drawn views — a perspective elevation showing the internal drum and brush mechanism in warm sepia wash, and a detailed plan view of the toothed cylinder and comb assembly.

Whitney drew and coloured this himself, and the document shows every year of its extraordinary 231-year existence — torn edges, fold marks, water patina, and the confident flowing cursive of "Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin" written at the top in the hand of one of America's most consequential inventors.

The bottom of the document bears the Patent Office attestation — "Patent Office March 10th 1855 — made under the direction of the Commissioner of Patents in conformity with act of January 1837" — confirming this as an official government copy of the original filing, made when the Patent Office systematically reproduced its earliest records.

At The Millaner Archive, we do not merely duplicate historical scans — we thoughtfully revitalise their original majesty.

This museum-grade reproduction has been meticulously optimised to honour every pencil line, every watercolour wash, and the extraordinary aged character of this irreplaceable piece of American history — without erasing a single crease or tear that makes it real.

Premium Presentation: Printed on heavy, archival-grade textured fine art paper with a soft matte finish perfectly replicating the aged parchment character of this 231-year-old document.
