Climb aboard this carriage for a moment and feel the gentle sway as the white horse trots along the wide avenue.

It is a soft summer afternoon in Phoenix Park, Dublin, 1895.

An elegant family takes their Sunday outing exactly as generations of Dubliners have done before and since — parasols raised against the mild Irish sun, a second carriage passing in the distance, the avenue stretching ahead lined with ancient oaks and elms.

Rising in the middle distance is the great granite obelisk of the Wellington Monument — at 205 feet, the tallest obelisk in Europe, raised in honour of the Dublin-born Duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo.

You are standing inside one of the largest enclosed urban parks of any capital city in the world — larger than London's Hyde Park and Regent's Park combined — Dublin's great green sanctuary, given to the public for leisure and quiet reflection in the heart of a bustling Victorian metropolis.

This rare photochrom print — produced between 1890 and 1900 using the celebrated Swiss hand-tinting chromolithography process — captures Phoenix Park at the height of its Victorian popularity, when carriage rides along its broad avenues were the essential Sunday ritual of fashionable Dublin society.

Just thirteen years before this photograph was made, Phoenix Park had been the scene of one of the most shocking political crimes of the Victorian era — the assassination of two senior British officials in 1882, an event that sent shockwaves through the British and Irish establishment alike.

This image captures the park returned to its true character: a place of peace, family leisure, and quiet civic pride, the violence of the past receding into memory beneath the ancient tree canopy.

Original photochrom prints of this subject and quality are exceptionally rare, making this one of the most atmospherically tranquil documents in the entire Hibernian Archive.

The composition is a masterclass in Victorian leisure photography.

Two horse-drawn carriages occupy the wide avenue with perfect compositional balance, their gentle diagonal movement drawing the eye naturally toward the distant Wellington Monument.

Elegant wrought iron park railings line both sides of the road, their rhythmic verticals creating extraordinary depth.

Mature parkland trees in full summer leaf frame the entire scene, their dappled canopy filtering the soft Dublin light exactly as it must have felt on the warm afternoon this photograph was taken.

At The Millaner Archive, we do not merely duplicate historical scans — we thoughtfully revitalise their original majesty.

This museum-grade reproduction has been meticulously optimised from our high-resolution TIF master to restore the luminous summer greens, the warm stone tones of the Wellington Monument, and the soft golden light of this irreplaceable 130-year-old Dublin afternoon.

This is the Dublin that existed between the headlines — not the politics, not the parliament, not the revolution, but the quiet Sunday pleasure of a family carriage ride beneath ancient trees.

Once this archival edition is gone, this precise restoration of this precise peaceful afternoon will not return.

On your wall, this print brings something genuinely rare into any room — not drama, not history's great turning points, but the simple, timeless pleasure of a beautiful afternoon spent outdoors with the people you love.
