Rosetta – Flamenco with a Twist
An original painting by Renate van Nijen
Rosetta depicts a flamenco dancer sitting within the decorative rosette of a guitar, with a traditional whitewashed Andalusian village in the background.
I created this painting during a special art event in which painters from several European countries were invited to paint live over the course of a week. We worked in a large public exhibition space provided by the town hall, where visitors could watch the paintings develop.
My fascination with flamenco began after attending a performance of flamenco music and dance. Living in La Herradura, a village on the coast of Granada in Andalusia, I am surrounded by the culture and traditions that inspired this series, which I call Flamenco with a Twist.
Rosetta was painted intuitively, without using a model. I usually mix my colours directly on the canvas, allowing the painting to evolve as I work. I am not searching for technical perfection, but rather for perfection within imperfection.
I don't necessarily want to tell a particular story through my paintings. I prefer to leave room for the viewer's imagination. A painting might awaken a memory, a feeling or an entirely different story.
And that is something I love about art: my story can become your story.
Available as a high-quality canvas print in various sizes and framing options.
