Inspired by the tree outside my window, this painting explores my sensory experience of its surface - the ridges, grooves and irregular layers of bark that catch my attention.
Rather than depicting the tree in a literal way, I wanted to translate the feeling of its texture into paint. The vertical lines, drips and overlapping marks echo the natural rhythms and fissures of the trunk, while the intense pinks, reds, blues and flashes of gold express how vivid that tactile experience feels to me.

Beneath the Bark looks beyond the appearance of the tree outside my window and explores the colour, movement and sensation I experience within its texture.
