Frida Buddha
A colourful Buddha painting by Renate van Nijen
Frida Buddha is one of my favourite paintings from my Buddha series.
I didn't set out to paint Frida Kahlo. As I worked on this Buddha, using expressive colours and building up the textures, I began to notice something in her appearance that reminded me of Frida. The resemblance emerged naturally, and that is how she received her name.
I began painting Buddhas during a difficult period in my life, when I was struggling to let go of upsetting experiences. Painting these peaceful faces, surrounded by vibrant colours, helped me rediscover a sense of calm. It was a wonderfully healing experience.
In Frida Buddha, I love the contrast between the stillness of her expression and the lively colours surrounding her. The flower beside her head adds a playful touch to this otherwise contemplative portrait.
I hope this painting will bring a sense of peace, colour and warmth into someone's home, just as creating my Buddha series brought peace into my own life.
Available as a high-quality canvas print in a selection of sizes and framing options.
