  • This original illustration from the first book of the Loch Mey Monster series perfectly captures the endless magic and raw majesty of Caithness. Set at dusk, it depicts the young heroine, Abby, alongside her faithful little pony by the quiet edge of a pond. In the background, the awe-inspiring island of Hoy rises dramatically against a stunning early evening sky, wrapped in a beautiful, deep purple hue. The landscape is alive with the gentle rustle of wildlife—geese taking flight into the twilight air while chickens and geese potter safely on the ground below. As an award-winning artist with a 24-year connection to this landscape, I wanted this piece to feel like a living fairytale, embodying the tranquil yet epic spirit of the far north where the everyday meets the extraordinary.

About the Artist

Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
