Drawn from life in a field just steps from my family croft, this piece reflects a 24-year relationship with the Caithness landscape. Having raised our five children here and hand-grown our own forest garden, I have spent decades feeling the literal and visual pulse of this land. While the Highland Cow is a timeless symbol of Scotland, this depiction is deeply personal. It is framed by our signature big skies and energized by the dramatic winds that sweep through our tranquil corner of the world. As an award-winning fine artist (BA Hons), I chose to express this profound, everyday connection through plenty of dramatic colour—capturing not just the form of the animal, but the vibrant, weather-bitten soul of the place we call home.

About the Artist
Rebecca Winkle is an award‑winning animal portrait artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a lifelong devotion to drawing that began at age five. Her work is rooted in the ancient landscapes of Caithness, where she has lived for 24 years, raising five children and sharing life with horses, cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, ponies — and the ever‑present cats who wander through her studio.
Her portraits are shaped by the sweeping northern skies, the quiet strength of trees, the softness of roses, and the wildlife that gathers around the Loch of Mey beside the family’s forest garden. Rebecca’s art is lifelike, dramatic, colourful and full of energy, capturing not only the animals she knows so well but the spirit of the land that surrounds her.
Each piece carries a spark of home — the croft, the creatures, the landscape, and the love that has shaped her life and her art.
