Ideas for paintings often come by themselves – at the ballet, at a concert, at a show. Italian Silk came from an haute couture fashion show: a woman radiating femininity stepped onto the runway, and the silk slid over her body, clinging to every curve. The name was obvious. While painting I let myself play boldly with the details, so the final piece came from both memory and interpretation. The face is abstract, its features formed by shadows; it steps aside and lets the intrigue hiding between the folds of soft silk shine through. I painted it in one go in about a week, and when I came back to it I didn't want to change a thing. Acrylic on canvas, 80 × 130 cm, 2012. The original was shown at my exhibition Beauty Supplements and later bought by collectors from California through Saatchi Art; this print is reproduced from it.
